The Historic Preservation Grant was launched in 2025 under the leadership of Rochester Main Street board president Ritchard Southard, who spearheaded the initiative with a strong belief in the importance of preserving Rochester’s historic buildings. Following Ritchard’s unexpected passing, the program was renamed the Ritchard Southard Historic Preservation Grant in his honor.
Though Ritchard was only part of the Rochester community for a short time, he brought a passion and vision for historic preservation that helped inspire lasting momentum around this work. Continuing this program in his name reflects the values he championed and the impact he made during his time with Rochester Main Street. The inaugural 2025 grant was awarded to First United Methodist Church in support of their capital campaign to repair and preserve their historic clock tower. The project received a $10,000 grant to help ensure this prominent downtown landmark remains part of Rochester’s skyline for generations to come. In 2026, Rochester Main Street is continuing the Ritchard Southard Historic Preservation Grant while formalizing the program structure and application process. The total grant pool for 2026 is $10,000. Property owners and organizations interested in applying are encouraged to download and complete the grant application. This program is designed to support meaningful preservation projects that protect Rochester’s historic character and strengthen downtown Rochester. The deadline for the 2026 grant application is July 1. |
