Ongoing Initiatives

This purpose of this page is to illustrate Rochester Main Street's ongoing community efforts. Check back frequently for updates.

In addition to the following projects, RMS is also exploring various projects to infuse more vibrancy into the downtown. Project ideas include stage upgrades to the Central Square stage, additional flower pots, percussion wall, adding more Edison stringed lights, lighted fountain in the Cocheco River.

Mini Scavenger Hunts

We have a long history of free gifts being hidden downtown. They include everything from painted rocks, ducks, bigfoots and more! We are making these surprise gifts more fun by bringing you a new Facebook Group Hidden Downtown!

Bigfoot

Rochester Main Street welcomes children and families to participate in the most unusual scavenger hunt in Rochester's history... Each summer, our volunteers hide 10 colorful Bigfoot cutouts throughout the downtown area, all within a safe walking distance from one another. Participants solve clues to find them all and submit their names into our raffle. It's fun for the whole family!

Central Square

Rochester Main Street is proud to officially sponsor the adopt-a-spot in Central Square. Volunteers work every spring, summer, and fall to plant and maintain flowers around the perimeter of the park and the Parson Main Monument.

Downtown Planters

This project includes maintenance of previous plantings (including our pollination gardens) as well as additional landscaping work throughout downtown. It also includes our flower barrels. If you or your organization would like to volunteer on this Project Please contact our office by email.

2025 Planters Sponsors

Thank you to our 2025 sponsors
We still have several sponsorships available. Sponsorships are $75, and we will place a plaque with your name or a dedication in a flower barrel. Email us if you are interested.

Doggie Bags

We love clean streets, sidewalks, and parks. To ensure these public spaces are ready for residents and visitors to enjoy, we encourage the use of pet waste stations. Main Street installed several stations around the downtown to help pet owners clean up after their animals.

Santa Series

Each year, Santa visits downtown Rochester to surprise as many businesses as possible. His mission is to find the perfect gift for Mrs. Claus while encouraging the community to support the downtown economy. Santa takes as many pictures as possible and promotes the businesses on social media.

Clean-ups

Want to get involved? Join us for one of our many downtown clean-ups. We focus on public parks, playgrounds, and wherever else there is a need. Led by the founders of Rochester Rise Up, these clean-up days are a great way to meet your neighbors, clean up an area in need, and make a difference in the community. Bring your rakes, shovels, and gloves!

Scarecrows

Every Fall, Rochester Main Street partners with the City of Rochester's Public Works Department to put up scarecrows throughout the downtown area. Volunteers gather donations to dress and repair the scarecrows each year.

Sign & Facade Program
2024 saw us roll out this program as a pilot program. We where able to pay 100% of the cost for a couple of gorgeous signs. Based off the results and feedback we will be expanding the program in 2025 to support our businesses in making sure the outside of their businesses look as professional and appealing as possible. We are hoping to add painting, landscaping and awnings into the program for 2025

River Walk Planting Beds
Volunteers originally installed 3 Bee Friendly Planting Beds along the River Walk several years ago. Last year we began to rejuvenate them. We are partnering with the Rochester Gardening Club who will provide the labor to really bring these planting beds too life!
