 | Growing Up Franco-American (with no patent leather shoes!), Rochester Historical Society, June 10 |
| On Thursday, June 10, at 7:00 PM Lorraine Masure will present "Growing Up Franco-American (with no patent leather shoes)" at the Rochester Historical Society on Hanson Street. A first-generation immigrant, Masure will describe what it was like for agrarian folk who bravely left their people and their homes in search of a more secure life. Their immersion into a different culture resulted in times of both struggle and joy. Masure will escort her audience through various settings of home, work, church, school, and town hall along the cultural nuances of her childhood that often resulted in an Old World upbringing that seems light years away - even to her today. "I think all seniors, especially those whose parents have a French heritage, will see themselves in my stories. And young people will be amazed at what life was like for us. It's informative, and now, as I look back, some of it's pretty funny, too," Masure said. All are invited to attend. Admission is free and refreshments will follow the meeting. For more information, please call the Rochester Historical Society at 330-3099 or e-mail rochesterhistorical@metrocast.net. | |

 | Coast Expands Late Night/Weekend Services For Summer Season |
|
Recently the COAST Board of Directors unanimously approved important and long sought after expansions of regional public transit service for this coming summer. The planned expansions include extended evening service on Fridays and added daytime and evening service on Saturdays. The bus routes that will be part of the summer service expansion include COAST Route 1, operating between Berwick, Somersworth and Dover, and COAST Route 2, operating between Rochester, Somersworth, Dover, Newington, and Portsmouth. Later evening departures from the downtowns of Portsmouth, Dover and Rochester will allow for people to leave their cars at home and enjoy a more affordable "night on the town" without having to drive. Jeremy LaRose, COAST Manager of Operations & Planning observed, "The Seacoast has so much to offer. There are a tremendous number of activities and events during the summer. We (COAST) are attempting to make it even easier to take advantage of this by expanding Friday evening service and adding Saturday service through the summertime." The demand for later service on weeknights and more service on Saturdays is nothing new. It has been consistently mentioned as a top priority on all recent COAST ridership surveys. In fact, COAST has wanted to make such improvements for several years, but did not have the funding. This year they have enough funding to offer a summertime expansion over a ten-week period between June 25 and August 28. Friday evening service on COAST Route 2 will be extended to 11:15 pm. Southbound bus service from Rochester will depart hourly throughout the entire afternoon and evening, up until 9:00 pm. Northbound bus service from Portsmouth will depart hourly from mid-afternoon and evening up until 10:30 pm. Saturdays. New and not previously available, Saturday bus service on COAST Route 1 will be operated between 6:40 am and 10:30 pm. Similar to weekday service offered by COAST, timely connections between COAST Routes 1 & 2 will be maximized to promote ease of travel for passengers. COAST Route 2 will also be expanded with the addition of a second bus being placed into service in the early afternoon. Two new southbound departures from Rochester will be added in the afternoon. Three new northbound departures from Portsmouth will be added, with the last departure at 10:25 pm. COAST Routes 1 and 2 offer safe, affordable, and convenient connections between the four cities of the region: Rochester, Somersworth, Dover and Portsmouth. The achievement of this seasonal service expansion represents COAST's continued long-term commitment to better meet the growing transportation needs of the region and improve the availability of affordable public transit service. It is estimated that the additional summertime bus service will cost approximately $29,000 to put in place. Approximately 60% of the funding will come from the Federal Transit Administration, while the remaining 40% will come through passenger fares and the local communities serviced by COAST. Details on the specific schedule changes and promotional materials are being finalized and should be ready for distribution in early June. The Cooperative Alliance for Seacoast Transportation (COAST) has provided public transit service to the Seacoast New Hampshire region since 1982. COAST is a public, non-profit transit system that relies primarily on federal and local government support to operate. For complete information on routes, schedules, and service, visit their web site at www.coastbus.org. |
 | Work To Begin June 1 On North Main Street Bridge Project - Rochester, NH |
|
The North Main Street Bridge will close to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic on Tuesday, June 1, as bridge construction crews begin work to preserve the 127-year-old structure. Wyman & Simpson of Richmond, Maine, and its subcontractor S.U.R. Construction of Rochester have been at work in recent weeks setting up signage and marking pavement in preparation for the closure. A detour will lead traffic around the construction site. Only the bridge will be closed. Patrons will be able to access businesses on North Main Street near both ends of the bridge throughout the anticipated 105-day bridge closure schedule. "We may have to limit traffic for safety reasons when there will be heavy equipment or materials moving into and out of the construction site," said Brian MacFawn, project manager for Wyman & Simpson, "but we anticipate those delays being brief." The detour will take traffic over the Cocheco River via Bridge Street near the intersection of Union and North Main streets. From there, motorists can connect to Farmington via Route 11 and Concord via Route 202. Also, signs recently went up regarding new parking restrictions on River Street between Bridge and Chestnut Streets. No parking will be permitted anywhere on River Street between Bridge and Chestnut Streets between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. The city has said the parking restrictions will be strictly enforced during the bridge closure. MacFawn said that during the few first days, most of the activity will involve setting the stage for the bridge rehabilitation work to come. Temporary barricades at both ends of the bridge will go into place on June 1. Concrete barriers will be set into place on Wednesday, June 2. By June 7, crews will help erect a banner that is being prepared for the project by local businesses. Rochester's three-arched North Main Street Bridge was designed and built between 1881 and 1883 by Silas Hussey, Jr., the city's master stonecutter. Its 50-foot width was uncommon at the time. The heavy brick arches are faced with split granite and make this bridge unique in New Hampshire. The historic structure crosses the Cocheco River, one of 16 protected rivers in the state, and serves as a gateway to the city's downtown district. The original cost for the bridge construction $13,800 in the late 1800s. The budget for engineering, rehabilitation of the bridge and additional road reconstruction is $1,700,000. For more information about the bridge closure, including a map of the detour route, visit the Rochester Public Works Department bridge web site or Facebook page.
