Growing Up Franco-American (with no patent leather shoes!), Rochester Historical Society, June 10th at 7pm
On Thursday, June 10, at 7:00 PM Lorraine Masure will present "Growing Up Franco-American (with no patent leather shoes)" at the Rochester Historical Society on Hanson Street.  A first-generation immigrant, Masure will describe what it was like for agrarian folk who bravely left their people and their homes in search of a more secure life.  Their immersion into a different culture resulted in times of both struggle and joy. Masure will escort her audience through various settings of home, work, church, school, and town hall along the cultural nuances of her childhood that often resulted in an Old World upbringing that seems light years away - even to her today.  "I think all seniors, especially those whose parents have a French heritage, will see themselves in my stories.  And young people will be amazed at what life was like for us.  It's informative, and now, as I look back, some of it's pretty funny, too," Masure said.
All are invited to attend.  Admission is free and refreshments will follow the meeting.  For more information, please call the Rochester Historical Society at 330-3099 or e-mail rochesterhistorical@metrocast.net.

Citizen's Bank Underwriter for Main Street Concert Series
Promotion Committee Volunteers at Rochester Main Street are please to announce that word was received late last week that Citizen's Bank of NH has awarded a $1,000 grant to be used to initiate a series of summer concerts downtown in the new Factory Court. The series, called the Factory Court Brown Baggers Concerts,  will take place on Friday noon times and feature local and traditional entertainers.  Those attending are encouraged to buy or bring a lunch and a lawn chair and head downtown to enjoy the music and being outside in this new public space. Factory Court was completed late last year as a volunteer project in cooperation with the City of Rochester Community Development Block Grants, and additional funding through Federal Savings Bank. Design and construction work was donated by Viking Design, Wes Flierl, Salmon Falls Ironworks and Studley's Flower Gardens. Local artist Kathy Jackson then lead volunteers in a public arts project to create mosaics on the planters at the rear of the courtyard area.  Factry Court has truly been a cooperative effort from start to finish in creating a new public space in the heart of downtown where residents and visitors may gather. The first concert is being scheduled for Friday, July 9 at 11:45 am

Rochester Economic Development Department/Rochester Main Street to Offer Businesses Welcome Bags

The Rochester Economic Development Office has purchased a quantity of re-usuable shopping bags with the downtown logo on them to use to hold information welcoming new businesses to downtown Rochester. This is a chance for local businesses to provide a "welcome coupon", dining establishments to offer sample menus, and local organizations to provide information on their services. The Main Street Program will be inserting their information brochure, annual report, annual events calendar and an invitation to attend the monthly Sidewalk Talks, held the second Tuesday of each month at locations throughout the downtown. There is no charge for this opportunity, and businesses wishing to take advantage of this should provide 100 items. Items may be dropped off at the Rochester Main Street Office at 18 South Main Street, Suite 2B or at the Rochester Community Development Office located in the Community Center on Wakefield Street,
Barbara Wold's Consumer Tips For June! Why Tourists Shop?
1. A stress-free time to shop. The beneficiaries are central business districts, Main Street communities,
historic areas, stores in or near hotels, malls and lifestyle centers, stores near convention centers, museum
stores and airport shops.
2. Price and value -- tourists may feel they are getting a better deal than they would at home.
3. A gift or an obligation.
4. Extending the travel experience -- they shop to remember the destination or trip.
5. Planned purchase -- tourists budget for souvenirs, especially families with children.
6. A time to shop with family and friends -- sometimes they are encouraged to treat themselves and buy more.
7. Unique and interesting merchandise with impulse appeal.
8. Appealing environment -- attractive shopping destination, good retail mix and great food.
Get in on the tourist trade by merchandising your tourist-targeted offerings with the traveler in mind. Make them
easy to spot, attractively displayed and nicely priced -- an irresistible little something as a remembrance from their
visit or a gift for the folks back home.
Let the tourist know your services through signage, such as complimentary gift wrap, special orders and UPS or
Fed-X shipping. Verbally let the traveler know they don't have to squeeze the item into their suitcase, it can be
shipped and on their doorstep when they return home -- this may encourage them to buy a larger or fragile item.
Today's definite trend in tourism is that extended and multi-generational families are increasingly traveling
together and are bringing the little ones along.
Small-town destinations and attractions are of particular interest to this growing market.
