Construction Advisory - Week of June 14-18, 2010: Crews to begin work on cofferdam at North Main Street Bridge

Rochester, NH - Downtown residents and businesses can expect more activity at the North Main Street Bridge work site during the week of June 14-18, as construction crews from bridge contractor Wyman & Simpson and subcontractor S.U.R. Construction continue to prepare for repairs to span one on the west side of the bridge. "We want people to be know there will be some heavy equipment moved onto the site early in the week - probably Monday and Tuesday - mainly a loader and an excavator," said Brian MacFawn, project manager for Wyman & Simpson. In addition, the contractor expects delivery of 60 pieces of 20-foot-long sheet pile. MacFawn expects about five trucks to be making deliveries. The sheet pile will be used in construction of a cofferdam at the base of the western end of the bridge.

A cofferdam is a structure designed to keep water away from a construction site normally under water, such as a bridge pier. A crew from Wyman & Simpson will be building the cofferdam around the base of span one to provide a stable and dry environment for repair of the historic, granite-faced structure. This past week, crews have been busy preparing the bridge for the work ahead. The aluminum railings were removed and brackets were attached to support plywood staging for crews that will be working on the outside of the bridge.

For more information about the bridge, visit the Rochester Public Works Department bridge web site (http://www.rochesternh.net/public_documents/RochesterNH_NMainBridge/) or the Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Rochester-NH/Rochester-NH-Public-Works-Department/369995545169?ref=ts).

Rochester Main Street Volunteers Announce Rochester Shoe Festival Winners
Although it rained there were no damp spirits at the first annual Rochester Main Street's Shoe Festival last Saturday. The Festival, underwritten by Spaulding Composites, Inc featured many contests as activities that were won by local residents. Prince Charming and the Glass Slippers appeared courtesy of MetroCast and made ten year old Chloe Eames of Rochester the Cinderella of the Festival. Bootleggers Footwear's Shoe Fly was won by Catherine Tewell with a distance of 63 feet while Eric Wasson captured the title of Ugliest Sneakers and a $100 Bootleggers Footwear Gift Certificate. One of the biggest crowd pleasers was the Holy Rosary Credit Union Men's High Heel Race, won by Matt Beaulieu who just barely edged out Mayor TJ Jean at the finish line. The last contest of the day was the Shoe Scramble, with the children's race won by Logan Hoffman of Rochester while John Parker of Hoosic Falls, NY took home the adult medal. All recipients received a commemorative Shoe Festival medal marking their achievements.

The Shoe Trees did indeed bloom courtesy of Profile Bank, just in time for the Festival and logistical support was provided by Northeastern Nonwovens, Inc, Citizens Bank and Waste Management of NH/ME. Rochester Main Street volunteers would like to thank all those who braved the rain, the volunteers, booths, vendors, and sponsors who made the day possible.
